Washington Commanders vs. Detroit Lions, Saturday, August 22, 2026

Washington opened its preseason with a 20-7 win over Miami, while Detroit lost its opener 16-14 to Cincinnati behind a backup-heavy lineup. Saturday marks the first time either team gives meaningful reps to its projected starting units on defense and along both offensive lines.

Detroit's chances have fallen 12 points since midweek, the largest single-day swing either team has seen this preseason, after both teams confirmed their top quarterbacks will sit out Saturday. Detroit coach Dan Campbell confirmed Jared Goff will not play against Washington, with Joshua Dobbs set to start and Luke Altmyer playing an equal share of snaps.

Washington's Jayden Daniels is not expected to see the field either, leaving the bulk of the workload to Sam Hartman and Athan Kaliakmanis behind an already-thin quarterback room missing Marcus Mariota.

Washington's Marcus Mariota will miss the rest of the preseason with a knee injury, pushing Hartman and Kaliakmanis into the bulk of Saturday's snaps regardless of Daniels' status. Detroit safeties Kerby Joseph (knee) and Brian Branch (Achilles) remain on the rehab field and are not expected to play, while tight end Sam LaPorta was held out of Wednesday's practice with a hip issue that flared up on a hit.

Detroit cornerback D.J. Reed is expected to see his first preseason action after missing nearly two weeks of camp with a groin injury, giving the secondary an experienced look before final roster cuts.
