Good afternoon, traders.

Grand Theft Auto V has been released on three generations of consoles, sold hundreds of millions of copies, and generated an estimated $10 billion. Yet somehow, its biggest heist may have been stealing 13 years of our lives while we waited for the sequel.

Now GTA VI is finally approaching, carrying a rumored billion-dollar budget and expectations no game could reasonably satisfy. And as we enter the home stretch, Kalshi traders are trying to answer the hardest question of all: can GTA VI live up to the hype?

Let’s get into it.

Release date?

Grand Theft Auto Six (GTA VI) is arguably the most highly anticipated video game of all time. For those of you who may not be into gaming, its predecessor, GTA V, was released back in 2013. Since then, fans have been dying for a sequel.

To put it into perspective, if you include GTA V, there have been seven official GTA games that have hit the market, the first six of which came out over the course of 11 years. Meanwhile, fans of the series have been waiting an agonizing 13 years for the next addition.

Now this may be a long wait, but it certainly isn’t without reason. GTA V set an incredibly high benchmark that its developer, Rockstar, now has to try to meet.

When released in 2013, GTA V sold over 11 million copies in just the first day. Within three days, the developer had already grossed over $1B. It didn’t stop there, though. Over the last 13 years, the game has sold a whopping 230 million copies. It still attracts nearly 18 million players every month.

That’s all to say, Rockstar really can’t afford to screw this up.

They originally announced that they were well into the production of GTA VI back in 2022, with a planned release in the fall of 2025. Since then, the game’s release has been delayed twice.

As of now, the developer has slotted its official launch day for November 19, 2026. But given the game's history of constant delays, 11% of traders are still expecting a release after December 2026.

At this point, given the market's sentiment, it does seem pretty likely that they will stick to their current release date. But there are a number of key reasons for fans to have doubts.

  1. Rockstar is notorious for delaying major titles

  2. The studio is famous for polishing games basically until release day

  3. GTA VI’s open world makes it a technological nightmare

When you factor those details into Rockstar's need to maintain the high bar that GTA V set, it's no wonder some traders still have their doubts.

GTA VI Online?

Of course, the base game's launch date is not the only question fans are tracking. Rockstar has confirmed that GTA VI will ship as a single-player experience only, with no online mode included at launch, mirroring how GTA V arrived without GTA Online back in 2013. This time, though, Rockstar and parent company Take-Two have stayed almost entirely quiet on when, or even whether, a new online companion is coming.

Kalshi traders are pricing that uncertainty directly. According to the market, there is currently a 16% chance GTA VI Online arrives before 2027, a number that has swung wildly over just the past several days, dipping into the mid single digits before climbing back toward the high teens.

And if you’re waiting for a PC version, there’s currently only a 60% chance it happens before 2028.

Sales record?

GTA V still holds the Guinness World Record for highest-grossing videogame launch in history, pulling in $815.7 million worldwide within 24 hours of its September 2013 release. That is the bar GTA VI has to clear to claim the title for itself.

Traders think it has a real shot. After a rocky opening day that briefly saw the price crater to just 30%, the market has settled into the 80s, currently sitting at 83%. Given the scale of the pent-up demand and the record-breaking price tag, breaking a decade-old sales record may be one of the safer bets in this whole preview.

GTA VI trailer release?

Rockstar already gave fans plenty to chew on this cycle. On August 27, the studio dropped Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a lengthy gameplay showcase that satisfied traders looking for a marketing beat before September. Now the question is whether another trailer lands before the game's November 19 launch, and if so, when.

According to the market, traders currently price just a 12% chance of a new trailer arriving before October, but that number jumps sharply from there, climbing to 72% before November and 82% before December. In other words, prices indicate Rockstar will likely save its next marketing push for closer to launch.

GTA VI radio songs?

No GTA game is complete without a soundtrack to match the crime spree, and traders are already weighing in on the tracklist. Farruko's Pepas tops the board at 34%, edging out "Rockstar" by Post Malone and 21 Savage at 30% and XXXTentacion's Look at Me! at 28%.

On the other end, Sicko Mode and XO Tour Llif3 are both stuck at just 7%. No tracklist has been confirmed, so for now, these are just traders' best guesses at what will be blasting out your stolen car’s stereo.

Game of the Year?

Now arriving this year is one thing, but what’s more amazing is that Kalshi markets are expecting the game to conquer it. According to an ongoing market, there’s a 72% chance the game will secure the 2026 Game of the Year award. That number would be high for any game, but GTA hasn’t even been released yet. Traders are basically pricing it like Rockstar has no room to fail. And in some ways, maybe they have a point.

If you take a look at all the media online, you’ll see that the anticipation around the release of GTA VI isn’t comparable to most games. The hype around it is much closer to if a major movie franchise and the next iteration of the iPhone had a baby. Since the first installments of GTA came out in the late 1990s, there are now multiple generations of fans who are actively waiting for it. This certainly gives Rockstar a big leg up in terms of cultural attention, and is potentially affecting our market price.

The last two major open-world games that Rockstar developed, Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA V, were hits among critics. On the popular gaming review platform Metacritic, both games received a 97, a massive score. And the forecast we have for GTA VI is similarly massive, currently hovering at almost 99 on our market. All this is to say that if it even slightly lives up to the hype and expectation people have for it, it's probably going to win a million awards.

The fact is, though, hype and reality are two very different things, so we’re going to have to wait to see if GTA can live up to the expectations its predecessor set. Hopefully for the fans of the series, the 13 years of waiting was worth it. And if it wasn’t, you can entertain yourself here with Kalshi Markets instead. Until next time.
