Ilhan Omar’s home raid
Federal agents conducted a raid of Omar’s Washington, D.C. home on Oct. 12 as part of a federal investigation.
The Associated Press reported that Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) conducted the raid, based on information obtained from anonymous sources. The Justice Department confirmed that HSI agents executed a search warrant on Omar's home.
The AP also reported that Omar said she will move out of her D.C. home following the raid, due to death threats and “noting that attention brought on by the raid has made her feel unsafe there.”
A person familiar with the investigation who spoke on condition of anonymity told the AP that HSI agents “are investigating potential fraud in her family’s immigration paperwork and have issued grand jury subpoenas to some of her relatives.”
MS NOW’s Chris Hayes spoke to Omar following the raid on her home. The Somali-American representative said she was awakened by the raid with a warrant and “a document waiving protections provided to her in the Constitution as a member of Congress,” which she declined to sign.
Another anonymous source told MS NOW that the warrant presented to Omar “listed potential violations involving immigration fraud, false statements in immigration proceedings, and conspiracy.”
Trump’s scrutiny of Omar
President Donald Trump and members of his administration have repeatedly questioned Omar's immigration history and called for scrutiny of her records.
The Washington Post reported that in 2019 during the first Trump administration, an unidentified political appointee “approached U.S. immigration authorities with a request that alarmed career staffers: Scrub the immigration records of Rep. Ilhan Omar, then a newly elected Democratic lawmaker from Minnesota, for evidence of fraud.”
Three former immigration officials said the request “struck staffers at the time as a highly unusual effort to wield federal power to dig up compromising material on a sitting member of Congress who was a prominent critic of President Donald Trump.”
HSI officials investigated Omar’s family and history but eventually determined “there was insufficient evidence of wrongdoing, one of the former officials said. The idea of pursuing a full investigation was eventually abandoned.”
Federal investigators are now revisiting allegations about Omar's immigration history that officials examined during Trump's first administration. The current investigation is looking into questions about Omar’s birth date and her father’s military history in Somalia, “which had passed scrutiny during the 2019 review. Depending on their findings, the administration could seek to charge Omar with a crime or move to challenge her status in the country.”
