Jay-Z
Jay-Z has played a major role in developing the Super Bowl halftime show since Roc Nation partnered with the NFL in 2019.
Buzzfeed.News’ Ellen Durney reported that Jay-Z’s company, Roc Nation, signed a deal with the National Football League to become its live music entertainment strategist.
The deal was part of the NFL’s Inspire Change Initiative to make the halftime show more inclusive by implementing new changes and tapping a wider variety of acts to perform at games. The partnership followed years of controversy over the NFL's response to player protests against racial injustice and police brutality. Roc Nation's agreement with the league included advising on live entertainment and supporting the NFL's social-justice initiatives.
Jay-Z was one of the artists calling for more acceptance and inclusivity in sports over the peaceful protests saying, “It’s about justice. It’s about injustice. And that’s not a black or white thing; it’s a human issue.”
The NFL reversed its decision on the protests and created a partnership with Roc Nation “to make some changes, that we can do some good,” Jay-Z said.
Billboard’s Angel Diaz reported that the Roc Nation deal with the NFL gives Jay-Z the final say on who performs the halftime show, including the headliner.
“It’s a decision that Jay makes,” Super Bowl halftime producer Jesse Collins said. “Since we’ve been on board with that show, he’s made it every year, and it’s been amazing. He’s always picked right!”
Miley Cyrus
Cyrus has previously been the subject of speculation about a possible Super Bowl halftime performance.
Following Bad Bunny’s performance at the last Super Bowl, speculation emerged that Miley Cyrus would take the stage for Super Bowl LXI.
Variety’s Ethan Shanfeld asked Cyrus about speculation that she could headline Super Bowl LXI.
“I always think the Super Bowl feels like too much pressure,” Cyrus said. “I would have to do the mental work of making it not about the Super Bowl, because they can’t help but go, ‘It’s millions of people, and it’s the most-watched thing in the world.’”
Cyrus said she could envision using the halftime show to take audiences through the different eras of her career. She compared the idea with her recent Hannah Montana anniversary celebration, saying a halftime performance could allow her to weave different eras of her career into one show.
“But if I could find a way to make it exactly what the Hannahversary was – taking a journey through the discography and appreciating each song, each era for what it is – I think I could find it in myself,” Cyrus said.
