The Swedish Academy, a group of writers, linguists, literary scholars, and historians, will announce the winner of the prestigious Nobel Prize in Literature on October 8.

Kalshi traders are mixed on who will take home the prize, with Canadian poet Anne Carson currently leading at 22% odds. Behind her are Chinese writer Can Xue at 14% and Australian novelist Gerald Murnane at 12%.

Who is in the Nobel Prize in Literature race?

There is no publicly available shortlist for the Nobel Prize in Literature, so traders are speculating about who is in contention for the prize.

Though prognosticators online expect a person of color to take home the prize, pointing to the Academy's increased international voting body that grew out of a 2018 sexual abuse scandal, Kalshi traders believe it will be awarded to the white poet.

Carson has been lauded for her unique style that mixes poetry and prose, and is best known for her 1998 novel Autobiography of Red.

Behind her in the market is Can Xue, a writer who “has been a favorite for several years running,” according to The Guardian. Her work has been longlisted twice for the International Booker Prize. Some international observers like The Straits Times believe the voters will opt for a woman of color “in a bid to diversify an award that has most often gone to Western male authors.”

In third in the market is Murnane, whose work has been described as “avant garde” by The Guardian, and has been tipped as a potential Nobel Prize in Literature winner in previous years.

One of the most volatile contenders is Mexican author Cristina Rivera Garza. She became a notable international figure after winning the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Memoir/Autobiography for her book Liliana's Invincible Summer. Her writing often covers topics like femicide, gender violence, migration, and U.S.–Mexico border issues, likely making her work feel vital and urgent to those paying attention to the race.

What are the other Nobel Prizes being announced this week?

The Nobel Peace Prize winner will be announced on October 9. Similar to the Literature prize, there are no announced shortlists, but Kalshi traders currently believe at 16% confidence that Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms will be awarded.

Winners for Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, Physics, and Physiology or Medicine have already been announced. Victors for the categories Literature, Economic Sciences, and Peace will be announced throughout this week.
