While incumbent Governor Greg Abbott continues to hold a strong lead on Kalshi's market for the Texas Governor’s race, Texas state Rep. Gina Hinojosa is beginning to make meaningful gains. Running alongside Senate candidate James Talarico, Hinojosa’s odds continue to break new all-time highs as early voting begins.

While her odds were under 10% for most of the summer, traders now price Hinojosa's chances at 37%, a surge consistent with other Democratic gains across races.

Polls Much Closer Than Anticipated

With Greg Abbott being the longest-serving governor in the country running in the Republican stronghold of Texas, many believed that a Democrat had virtually no chance of competing in this race from the outset, the polls now indicate otherwise. While Abbott maintains a 63% chance of victory on Kalshi, his chances were priced above 80% as recently as October 12.

Cost of living concerns, surging fuel prices, immigration issues specific to Texas, and strain on consumers from the Iran war are making voters reconsider their options.

Abbott currently stands at 48.9% to Hinojosa's 47% per the RCP polling average, with Hinojosa unexpectedly leading in the YouGov and NYT/Siena polls.

Polling numbers have tightened significantly since August, coinciding with massive gains for Democrats in key races and for the US House and Senate.

Democrats had only a 19% chance of winning the Senate in April 2026; it is now 68%.

Unprecedented Early Voting Helping Hinojosa

The economy and cost of living issues are driving voters to the polls in droves, with two large Texas counties, Harris and Dallas, breaking first-day early voting records.

As Texas has increasingly turned purple, GOP fears have recently reached new heights as Trump's popularity has waned in the state, one that he carried by almost 14 points. The early voting numbers have only amplified these fears: young people, Hispanics, women, and other demographics are proving to be of particular concern.

While early numbers indicate Democrats are energized, they have historically taken advantage of voting early while more Republicans wait to vote on Election Day. Many gains Hinojosa and other Democrats are seeing could prove to be a mirage as Election Day voting has closed the gap for Republicans in the past.

One factor helping to keep Hinojosa competitive with Abbott is her strategic decision to campaign with popular US Senate candidate James Talarico. As Talarico continues to gain national prominence, it has boosted Hinojosa’s name recognition.

Takeaway:

While Greg Abbott holds a significant lead, Gina Hinojosa’s odds are proving resilient. James Talarico continues to lead Ken Paxton, propping up Hinojosa’s chances.

  • Greg Abbott winning the Texas governor race: 63%

  • James Talarico winning the Texas Senate race: 68%
