With the 2026 midterm elections just weeks away, traders on Kalshi continue to favor Democrats making substantial gains in Congress. However, the markets suggest a distinction between Democrats winning enough seats to secure a blue wave and achieving the much larger gains associated with a blue tsunami.

The odds of a blue wave have remained relatively stable since March 2026, while expectations for a blue tsunami have declined since April 2026. The latest prices suggest traders still expect a favorable election for Democrats, but are less confident in an overwhelming victory.

Blue wave odds remain elevated

Democrats achieve a blue wave: 80%

Kalshi traders currently give Democrats an 80% chance of achieving a blue wave in the 2026 midterm elections.

The market has declined modestly from March 16, 2026, when traders gave Democrats an 83% chance of reaching the threshold. That represents a decrease of 3 percentage points over roughly seven months.

Despite the decline, the market continues to price a blue wave as the clear favorite. Traders are giving the outcome nearly four out of five chances of occurring, suggesting that Democrats remain well positioned to win enough seats to reach the market’s defined thresholds.

Kalshi defines a blue wave as Democrats holding at least 218 seats in the House of Representatives and at least 49 seats in the Senate following the midterms. Both conditions must be met for the market to resolve in favor of a blue wave.

The relatively small decline since March suggests that confidence in a Democratic wave has held up even as expectations for a more dramatic victory have weakened.

Blue tsunami odds at 45%

Democrats achieve a blue tsunami: 45%

The outlook is more uncertain for a blue tsunami, which would require Democrats to secure substantially larger gains across Congress.

As of October 15, Kalshi traders give Democrats a 45% chance of achieving a blue tsunami. That is down from 53.9% on April 11, 2026, a decline of 8.9 percentage points.

Unlike the blue wave market, which sits at 80%, the blue tsunami market now places the outcome below an even chance.

Kalshi defines a blue tsunami as Democrats holding at least 235 House seats and at least 51 Senate seats when the midterms conclude. Those thresholds would require Democrats to go beyond simply winning control of Congress and secure a significantly larger majority in the House while also reaching the Senate threshold.

The decline suggests traders have become less confident that Democrats will achieve gains of that magnitude. A blue tsunami remains a plausible outcome, but the market currently treats it as less likely than not.

What's the difference between a blue wave and a blue tsunami?

Kalshi uses specific congressional seat thresholds to distinguish between the two outcomes.

  • Blue wave: Democrats hold at least 218 House seats and at least 49 Senate seats

  • Blue tsunami: Democrats hold at least 235 House seats and at least 51 Senate seats.

The distinction is important because a Democratic victory in both chambers would not automatically qualify as a blue tsunami. Democrats would need to reach the higher seat thresholds in both the House and Senate.

The two markets therefore measure different levels of Democratic success. The blue wave contract reflects the likelihood of Democrats reaching a defined set of thresholds, while the blue tsunami contract asks whether they can secure a considerably larger House majority and at least 51 Senate seats.

The takeaway

Kalshi markets continue to favor Democrats achieving a blue wave in the 2026 midterms, but traders are less confident about a blue tsunami.

The blue wave market has declined from 83% on March 16, 2026 to 80% on October 15, a modest shift that leaves Democrats heavily favored to meet the market's thresholds.

Meanwhile, the blue tsunami market has fallen from 53.9% on April 11, 2026 to 45% on October 15. That decline indicates that traders increasingly see a more limited Democratic victory as more likely than an overwhelming one.

Kalshi markets now predict:

  • Blue wave this year: 80%

  • Blue tsunami this year: 45%

The overall picture is one of continued Democratic strength, with a larger question remaining over just how big the party’s gains will be in November.
