Happy Saturday, traders.
The Senate elections are getting crazy. To the surprise of probably everyone, a Democrat is beginning to make headway in Texas. Meanwhile, up north, Michigan decided to nominate a very progressive candidate.
One candidate trying to break a nearly four-decade-long Democratic drought; the other is testing just how far left a swing state is willing to go. November should be fun.

Texas Senate Race
If you haven't been paying attention, things are heating up in Texas. It's been nearly four decades since a Democrat has won a statewide election in the state, but according to our prediction markets, the race is neck and neck.
Just to be clear, a statewide election just means an election where voters from all across the state are at the ballot, not some regional election. There are plenty of pockets in Texas that are primarily blue; many of the major cities, like Austin, for example, tend to swing that way. But in general, the state almost always votes Republican.
The fact that a Democrat is doing this well is a huge deal. So the question is, how and why is this happening?
To start, let's take a look at the two candidates. Ken Paxton represents the Republican Party. He’s a big name in Texas. He’s served as the Texas Attorney General since 2015 and has Trump's endorsement.
On the other side, we have James Talarico. At 37, he represents a generational shift in Texas. Additionally, he’s leaned heavily into his Christian faith, which tends to be highly effective in religious states.
In our opinion, Talarico is likely performing so well in the polls due to the combination of a couple of important factors. For one, there's controversy around Paxton. In 2023, he was impeached by the Republican controlled Texas House. He was later acquitted by the Senate, but that can taint your reputation and leaves an opening. Additionally, Texas is very religious. Voters often vote based on their faith; if they don't agree with a leader's morals, they may swing the other way. And now that a Democratic nominee (Talarico) is leaning into faith, we may see a number of voters go that direction.
It’s hard to say how the Texas election is going to pan out, but this 50-50 race is going to be an incredibly important one to watch. If a Democrat can actually win a statewide election in Texas, it will likely be a key indicator of how things may pan out in other states or in national elections. Who knows, if things keep playing out like this, we may even see Texas become a swing state in the coming decades.
The Progressive Question
Texas ending up with a Democratic Senator would obviously be a huge switch-up. But moving north to Michigan, we have an equally crazy situation beginning to pan out.
Although the state is considered purple during presidential elections, a Republican hasn't been elected to the Senate since 1996. But this year, the GOP is hopeful that left-leaning Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed may provide them with an opening for Republican nominee Mike Rogers to pull an upset.
El-Sayed is a very progressive candidate. He's been a large critic of Israel, wants to tax billionaires more, is looking to abolish ICE, and provide Medicare for all. Oftentimes, having far-leaning opinions on points like these can ostracize voters. According to our markets, Democrats are still favored to win the state, but the odds have dropped from 70% to 58% in wake of Tuesday's primary.
Here's why this is so important. If this progressive push in a swing state like Michigan works, it means it might work on a larger scale. It shows political leaders that there is room for progressive leaders; it may lead to a big change in who they begin running and the platforms they push. But if progressives swing for the fences and strike out, it could prove that the fears of more moderate Dems were justified.
Think of these elections as a political proving ground. They let political strategists test rhetoric and campaign strategies. If things work at this level, it gives them an idea of what might work in a presidential campaign. It's no secret that the Democratic Party presidential nominee is a huge question mark. That's why what's going on in Michigan is so important. This election may give the Democratic Party an idea of who they can run on the big stage.
We’ll need to wait and see how this goes, but we highly recommend paying attention to this election. How things go in Michigan may be the impetus for new political agendas across the board. And if you’re curious to see how any other elections are going in the Senate, check out our other races here.
