Two of Major League Baseball’s smallest markets will compete for an opportunity to represent the American League in the World Series.

The Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians rank 28th and 30th in total salary payroll, respectively, according to data from Spotrac. This season, both clubs’ rosters cost less than $100 million and combined, they would not even exceed the average 2026 spend of nearly $182 million per team.

Nevertheless, both are among the four remaining teams vying for a World Series title.

When they meet in Game 1 of the ALCS on Monday, Kalshi traders think it is the Rays who will earn an early leg up, pricing them at 60% to take the opening matchup.

Rays enter ALCS as favorites after sweeping Yankees

After sweeping the New York Yankees in the ALDS, the Rays are the favorites in their best-of-seven series with the Cleveland Guardians with odds trading at 63% for the American League East winner.

Those odds closely resemble Monday’s matchup, where the Rays are priced at 60% to take Game 1 in their home ballpark, Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The home team will send out right-hander Drew Rasmussen, who dazzled in his last time on the mound against the Yankees. The righty dominated the Bronx Bombers, striking out ten and carrying a no-hitter until two outs in the eighth inning. The effort led to a 1-0 Rays victory.

The performance spearheaded a Rays sweep, which has Rasmussen and the entire Tampa Bay bullpen fully rested ahead of their matchup with the Guardians. Cleveland on the other hand is dealing with much less rest, getting just one full off day before needing to travel to Tampa for Game 1 of the ALCS.

The Guardians fell behind the Chicago White Sox 2-0 in their ALDS series, but won three consecutive games to advance. The Guardians will turn the ball to left-hander Foster Griffin, who will attack the Rays in their weaker platoon split. Despite finishing the regular season as one of baseball's best teams, the Rays were among the weakest teams in the league against lefties this season, ranking 26th against southpaws with just a 90 wRC+.

After a day off, the Guardians bullpen should all be available as well with high-leverage relievers Hunter Gaddis and Cade Smith each throwing less than 30 pitches in Game 5.

Kalshi traders are forecasting a lower-scoring affair, with the game finishing with more than 6.5 runs trading at 53% as of Monday afternoon.

Rays still trail Dodgers, Brewers in World Series title odds

Even though one of the Rays or Guardians will have the opportunity to represent the American League in the World Series, the pair still trail their National League counterparts in World Series odds, according to Kalshi traders.

Trailing 1-0 in the NLCS, it is the Dodgers that maintain top honors of the remaining teams, holding odds of 39% on Monday. The Brewers are priced just behind, trading at 30.5% ahead of their Game 2 matchup with Los Angeles.

Meanwhile the Rays and Guardians are trading at 23.2% and 9.8%, respectively, to take home the title.

Given their status as favorites to take the ALCS, Kalshi traders make the Rays the likely representative in World Series matchup markets, with Tampa Bay versus Milwaukee the most likely at 35%.

A matchup featuring the Rays and Dodgers is the next most likely outcome according to traders, with odds trading at 29.2%.
