More teams enter the race
Since LeBron announced that he'd be leaving Los Angeles and entering free agency, several teams have emerged as potential suitors.
The Athletic’s Tony Jones reported that Philadelphia is making a pitch for James based on information he obtained from “a league source who spoke on condition of anonymity.”
Philadelphia still trails Cleveland and Golden State on Kalshi's market, but reports suggest the team has joined the growing list of teams exploring a deal. The Denver Post’s Bennett Durando wrote there are rumors floating about that Denver is trying to make a pitch for James, according to “a league source out of the Nuggets.”
This isn’t the first time Denver has sought LeBron. Team president Josh Kroenke sent James a throwback Nuggets jersey in 2018 just before he signed with the Lakers. James also has a close relationship with several members of the team already including center Nikola Jokic.
Cleveland’s pitch
Cleveland seems like the most logical choice for LeBron since it’s the team who gave him his start in professional basketball after drafting him in 2003.
Kevin Merida wrote a guest essay in The New York Times imploring James to pick Cleveland as the team for his final season based on a number of different reasons. Merida argued that returning to Cleveland would strengthen James' legacy beyond basketball.
For starters, Ohio is James’ home state and just a few miles away from his hometown of Akron “where his heart, his cares, his mom, his philanthropy reside.”
“A return to Cleveland – this would be his third stint with [Cleveland] – is a chance to be remembered beyond sports,” Merida wrote. “And this is more important than it has been in a long while.”
Whether driven by sentiment, roster fit or growing speculation, traders have steadily shifted toward Cleveland since July 1, making Cleveland the market's current favorite as James' free agency continues.
