Anne Hathaway's fifth and final movie of 2026, Verity, arrives in theaters on Friday — and Kalshi traders have slashed their Rotten Tomatoes forecast by 24.1 points to 40%.

The Colleen Hoover adaptation saw a drop-off in its Kalshi forecast since the Friday prior to its premiere, with a more significant decline occurring after the review embargo was lifted on Wednesday, September 30.

The positive reviews

The film helmed by Michael Showalter is receiving tepid reviews, with most of the praise directed at the film’s cast.

Pete Hammond at Deadline applauded the performances of Hathaway and co-star Dakota Johnson, saying, “Hathaway and Johnson are both magnetic performers and make it watchable — particularly Johnson who carries the largest load here.” Hammond also praised some of the below-the-line talent, including production design and score.

IndieWire's chief film critic David Ehrlich's review graded the movie with a B-. He also lauded Johnson's performance, calling her “even better in a role that might have seemed thankless in the hands of a less elusive and/or convincing actress.”

Maria Loreto at Polygon echoed this sentiment, saying the two lead actresses are “in on the joke,” though she noted that the film overall is “too controlled, too serviceable to commit to the bit.”

Comparing the film adaptation to the book, Brian Eggert at Deep Focus Review said, “Verity improves upon nearly everything that didn’t work for me about Colleen Hoover’s 2018 potboiler of the same name.”

Carly Lane at Collider agreed, positing that Verity is “leading the pack” of Colleen Hoover book-to-film adaptations.

The negative reviews

Many reviewers commented on the absurdity of Verity’s plot, and lamented that the filmmakers didn’t ultimately push into the campiness of the erotic thriller enough. Unlike some of the positive reviews, many also didn’t connect with the lead performances.

Richard Lawson of The Hollywood Reporter dubbed the film a “dumb mystery.” He wrote, “the movie is neither sexy nor smart, despite the objective hotness and intelligence of its performers.” Lawson also took issue with Johnson’s performance, calling her murmuring technique for line delivery “grating.”

Nick Schager at The Daily Beast, meanwhile, had some choice words for Hathaway. “Verity is so absurd it could cost Anne Hathaway her second Oscar for The Odyssey,” he writes. Schager criticized the script for its lack of subtlety and its “unintentional laughs.”

Amelia Emberwing at The Wrap praised the cinematography as “visually appealing” but didn’t connect with the performances or writing. “The runtime of Verity is a significant barrier, and its screenplay thinks it’s a bit too smart for its own good,” Emberwing wrote. “The film has its feet in two worlds…Either one would have been great, but playing on both sides of the fence doesn’t do Showalter’s film any favors.”

The takeaway:

Kalshi markets now predict:

  • Verity to score above 40% on Rotten Tomatoes: 56%

  • Verity to score above 45% on Rotten Tomatoes: 20%
