What’s at stake

While a trip to the semifinals and continued momentum ahead of the US Open are on the line, tonight’s matchup between Swiatek and Rybakina also comes with major ranking implications.

Swiatek, a former world No. 1, has fallen to No. 5 coming into the tournament after suffering a down year by her standards. The six-time Grand Slam champion earned just her first final and title of the calendar year last week when she defeated Rybakina in straight sets.

But finding a way through Rybakina will be critical if she wishes to defend her ranking points from last season when she won the Cincinnati Open crown in a match against Italy’s Jasmine Paolini. As it stands, Swiatek finds herself at No. 9 in the live rankings, pending her result against Rybakina later tonight.

For world No. 2 Rybakina, an even bigger milestone is within reach: a world No. 1 ranking. The current world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka fell to Sara Bejlek in the fourth round on Wednesday, providing Rybakina the opportunity to earn the top spot for the first time should she make it to the Cincinnati Open finals.

To get there though, she’ll need to reverse last week’s result and find a victory in the semifinal round as well.

The road to the quarterfinals

After strong results last week, both players have made quick work of their first three rounds in Cincinnati.

Swiatek needed less than 90 minutes in her straight set victory over Diane Parry in the fourth round, and she’s only dropped 1 set in the tournament overall. Add in her victory last week, and she’s now won nine consecutive matches.

Rybakina on the other hand hasn’t dropped a set yet this tournament, winning all three of her matches in straight sets.

While their time on court has been similar this week, the pair have played a lot of matches of late, including their deep runs last week in Toronto. That seemed to play some role in their most recent match, when Swiatek earned a victory in a rather straightforward affair, 6-2, 6-3. At the conclusion of that match, Rybakina admitted “the tank was half empty,” according to a report by SportsNet.

This time Kalshi traders don't foresee quite such a lopsided contest, with traders pricing the odds of more than 20.5 games at 59% at the time of writing.

A storied rivalry

As two of the top female tennis players in the world, the pair have already met 17 times on the WTA Tour across surfaces. Swiatek leads a tightly contested head-to-head battle with 10 wins against 7 losses, including a victory over Rybakina in the semifinals of the Cincinnati Open last year.

The Polish star has also taken six of the last eight meetings overall, but they’ve split their two encounters this year. It was the Russian-born, Kazakhstan-representing Rybakina who won in the Australian Open quarterfinal tilt in January, 7-5, 6-1. Swiatek evened the score last week.

Title Chances

With Sabalenka bowing out on Wednesday night, the WTA Cincinnati Champion market has seen a notable shakeup in the last 24 hours. Priced at 15% at the start of play on Wednesday, Swiatek's odds of hoisting the trophy have jumped to 27% as of Thursday afternoon.

Traders priced in a similar boost for Rybakina, who is trading at 16% to claim the crown, making her the third most likely champion alongside American Coco Gauff (16%), behind Swiatek and fellow American Jessica Pegula (25%).

Future Matchups

The winner of Thursday night's match will meet Jessica Pegula in the semifinals. Pegula advanced after defeating Amanda Anisimova earlier Thursday.
