With the 98th Academy Awards just a few hours away, Kalshi traders are already pricing favorites in all the major categories. And in the Best Film Editing market, Andy Jurgensen is currently trading at 82% for his work on One Battle After Another.

Jurgensen is followed by F1’s Stephen Mirrione at 8%, and Sinners’ Michael P. Shawver at 7%.

The final chase

Jurgensen spoke with The Film Stage’s Jordan Raup about the final car chase that serves as the film’s action-packed crescendo. He said the scene was supposed to be longer, but sticking to “the most dynamic shots” from the different perspectives of the actors in the scene made it more dynamic.

“You’re just sorting through, trying to find the best shots, the most dynamic shots,” Jurgensen said. “There’s also looking through all the shots of her looking through the rearview mirror and trying to track that with all the eye movements to make sure that all tracked. It’s something that just evolves. You are just starting to piece stuff together.”

What the critics said

RogerEbert.com’s Brian Tallerico called the movie “a remarkably propulsive, fun, and eventually moving piece of work about the human beings caught up in the chaotic machine. It’s a live wire that drops in the first scene, setting off sparks for the next 162 minutes.”

IGN’s Michael Calabro cited the editing as a key component for the film’s cinematic success.

“As the plot thickens, with Anderson spending time letting layers of character drama peel away, scenes take longer,” Calabro wrote. “He thus has to rely on editing to convey a juxtaposition of thematic elements to keep audiences enticed.”

Best Cinematography

One Battle After Another is also up for Best Cinematography, and traders expect it to win that Oscar as well. The film currently sits at 77% on the market, followed by Sinners at 19%, and Train Dreams at 8%.
