Good afternoon, traders.

The last couple of weeks have been dominated by big tech news. SpaceX is IPOing this week, Anthropic and OpenAI are probably close behind, and general news about AI is literally nonstop. That’s why we’re giving you a break.

Instead of trying to predict which company is going to take all of our jobs first, we’re going to predict the outcome of the 2026 World Cup.

2026 World Cup:

Later today, the World Cup kicks off its first game in Mexico City. But before getting into any match-specific details, we have to talk about the absolutely massive scale of this year's cup.

This year’s tournament will be the biggest World Cup ever as well as the largest single sporting event in history. 48 national teams are playing in 104 matches across three massive countries with an expected turnout of 6.5 million people. For reference, the last World Cup only took place in Qatar and featured 32 teams across 64 matches.

Given the massive scale of this year's cup, it makes sense that our markets are reflecting huge interest. Our Men’s World Cup winner market is already seeing over $130 million in volume, with the current winner projected to be Spain. Many of our traders expect them to be playing France in the finals, but additional serious contenders in the finals include England, Brazil, and Portugal.

So why is Spain so favored at the moment?

For those unaware, the team has been on an absolute bender. Going into the World Cup, they are on a 31-game unbeaten streak. Additionally, they won the 2024 Euro tournament and reached the 2025 Nations League Finals. They’re coming into the tournament with an incredible track record and arguably the most well-rounded team.

The Golden Boot

What's so interesting about this year's favorites is the shift from traditional powerhouse teams. For the past few decades, Brazil, Italy, Germany, and Argentina have dominated the World Cup. But as we showed earlier, this year's favorites in order are Spain > France > England.

All three of the current favorite teams feature players that our markets project to be top contenders for winning the Golden Boot. For our American readers out there, the Golden Boot is the award presented to the player with the most goals during the tournament. Leading the market right now is Kylian Mbappé (France), Harry Kane (England), and Mikel Oyarzabal (Spain).

What's important to keep in mind here, though, is that the factor that contributes most to winning the Golden Boot is the number of matches played. It makes perfect sense why these three players are currently leading the projections, because everyone thinks their teams will make it the farthest in the tournament. If an upset occurs and if these teams get knocked out early, the market odds could flip instantly.

How easily the odds for the Golden Boot could change really highlights what's going to make the World Cup so interesting to watch and trade. This is the largest cup ever with a ton of matches. The outcome of every match has the potential to affect the final outcome of the cup and, subsequently, will affect the secondary prediction markets. The only way to stay on top of these trades is to watch closely.

And for those of you who don’t really care about sports, you can always take a stab at predicting the halftime performance at the final.
