Trump raises possibility of demolition

The demolition questions come amid an ongoing legal dispute over efforts to add Trump's name to the Kennedy Center. Trump said Wednesday that the building could eventually be “ripped down” without his administration's intervention.

The Hill reported that Trump was photographed aboard Air Force One on Wednesday examining a large printout that appeared to reference demolition of the Kennedy Center.

President Trump also “suggested during a campaign stop in North Carolina that day that his administration could demolish the center if it doesn’t honor Trump in addition to former President John F. Kennedy, and close for renovations of his design.”

ABC News reported that the president also told reporters, “I think that the Trump administration should certainly have recognition. Because frankly, if we don’t do that, it’s going to close. It’ll end up being ripped down.”

The Associated Press reported that U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ordered Kennedy Center officials Thursday to provide more than 30 days' notice before making major changes to the renovation plans previously presented to the court, including any demolition of the main building.

Kennedy Center Executive Director Matt Floca said the current closure is a separate, temporary measure prompted by “acute risks to public safety” from structural deterioration. He said most public areas would remain closed for at least seven days while officials assess the building.

Kennedy Center protest

Members of the Kennedy family have criticized Trump's actions involving the center.

People reported that Kerry Kennedy, the daughter of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, called for a protest at the cultural institution on her X account. Maria Shriver, a niece of President Kennedy, separately criticized the center's closure, calling the situation “a tragedy.”

ABC News also reported that protesters from the organization Hands Off the Arts are expected to hold a “Hands Around the Kennedy Center” demonstration later today.

“The demonstration opposes the recent sudden closure of the facility, the installation of security fencing, and political efforts to alter or demolish portions of the presidential memorial,” the group said on its website.

For now, Kalshi's demolition market remains at 11%, while Cooper's order requires Kennedy Center officials to provide more than 30 days' notice before any demolition or other major change to the renovation plans can move forward.

Adding Trump’s name

A separate market prices a 43% chance that Trump's name will appear on the Kennedy Center facade before July 2027, 35% before Jan. 1, 2027 and 6% before Oct. 1, 2026.

The takeaway:

Kalshi markets now predict

  • Trump putting his name on Kennedy Center by July 2027: 43%

  • Trump putting his name on Kennedy Center by end of 2026: 35%
