Things aren't looking so super for DC's new Supergirl movie.
Earlier this week, Kalshi traders sharply lowered the film’s Rotten Tomatoes forecast just before the review embargo lifted. But the forecast is continuing to fall as more reviews are released.
The film, which stars Milly Alcock as the titular Supergirl, currently carries a 57% Tomatometer rating, and traders think it will end up even lower at 56%, below the 60% “rotten” threshold.

The good reviews
Even though the film may not officially be in “Fresh” territory, it’s still getting some good reviews from top critics.
Katie Walsh of Tribune News Service gave the movie 2.5 stars out of 4. She praised the film for its “retro” look and feel with its “indie sleaze swagger, a girly rock soundtrack, and an unapologetically downbeat and gritty story.” She didn’t like how the CGI and “bland digital backgrounds” get in the way of its visual storytelling ability, but she praised Alcock’s performance as the glue that keeps the whole film together.
“What works here is Alcock, and all that matters is that we find some inspiration in the girl at hand,” Walsh writes.
Rolling Stone’s David Fear applauded the DC Comics’ movie for going deeper than other superhero movies have been willing to go over the past few years. The script from Ana Noguiera, direction from Craig Gillespie and Alcock’s performance show that the superhero genre doesn’t just have to be a rehash of the same hero’s journey as a do-gooding heroine who has already come to terms with the depth of their powers and their purpose in the universe.
“This interpretation of the twenty-something with an iconic S on her chest feels far more nuanced,” Fear writes.
The not-so-good reviews
Other film critics have some very critical things to say about the punk rock take on the DC superheroine.
Peter Travers of The Travers’ Take only gave the movie 2 out of 4 stars. He gave props to Alcock’s portrayal of Supergirl as “punk heaven,” but noted that “It’s a damn shame that her movie is mostly hell on earth and a slog to trudge through.”
Travers criticized the film's ticking-clock premise, which sees Krypto poisoned and gives Kara just 72 hours to find the antidote while helping Ruthye seek revenge for her murdered family.
“It doesn’t know how to treat the fem warrior at its core,” Travers writes.
Odie Henderson of The Boston Globe had some harsher words for DC’s newest attempt to bring its iconic superheroes to the big screen. He called it a step down from last year’s “Superman” epic that first introduced Alcock’s character in a cameo scene. He says the revenge plot feels forced and contrived as it tries to shoehorn other DC characters into the story like the loud, chain wielding Lobo, played by Jason Momoa.
“Momoa has fun with the role, but the film doesn’t know what to do with him,” Henderson writes.
With the Tomatometer sitting almost exactly where traders now expect it to finish, the market suggests investors believe Supergirl will remain one of the more divisive entries in DC's recent slate.
The takeaway:
