Why Jack Lowden?
The price jump comes as rumors are circulating that the Slow Horses star is being considered to play the next James Bond.
GQ’s Kyle MacNeill reported that British television presenter, author and podcast host Richard Osman said he'd heard Lowden's name connected to the role. He announced the news on his podcast The Rest is Entertainment with his co-host Marina Hyde.
“Someone told me for definite who the new Bond is the other day, but, I mean, that’s happened before,” Osman said. “The name I’ve heard is Jack Lowden.”
Osman later clarified that Lowden is “definitely being strongly considered” for the James Bond role, but MacNeill pointed to several other factors that could work in Lowden's favor.
For starters, he's currently playing a spy on a hit TV show. He's played MI5 agent River Cartwright on the Apple TV series Slow Horses since 2022. Bond may be a member of MI6, but that's only one number away from MI5. He's also had prominent roles in TV dramas such as War & Peace and The Passing Bells, and played an RAF fighter pilot in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk.
MacNeill also noted that Slow Horses “deals with foreign espionage – and mysterious maniacal bad guys living on evil islands – not the domestic mundanity of the civil service. But still, Lowden’s time on the show translates to having direct experience of playing a British spy.”
Lowden is far from the first actor linked to the role. Since Daniel Craig stepped away from the James Bond franchise in 2021, names including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Harris Dickinson and Elordi have circulated in casting reports and rumors. Until recently, Turner led the Kalshi market.
MacNeill noted, however, that Lowden has several qualities traditionally associated with Bond. He has experience in big-budget productions, the right attitude, and even “shares Bond’s Scottish roots.”
“[Lowden] has many of the actorly specs required of the next James Bond,” MacNeill wrote. “Take crime drama The Gold, where he has the swagger and sharp wits on lock, riffing off a sense of threat that ricochets across every scene. He’s also got mega-film experience (you know, Nolan!) but still feels like a fresh choice, versus someone who’s already got the keys to a Los Angeles mansion.”
In fact, the only catch is that Lowden may be too perfect for the role. Producer Amy Pascal told Deadline that the next Bond actor has to be “stirring and exciting and different."
The takeaway:
Kalshi markets now predict:
Lowden being cast as James Bond: 32%
Turner being cast as James Bond: 27%
Elordi being cast as James Bond: 13%
