While Republican candidate Byron Donalds continues to hold a sizable advantage in Kalshi’s market for the Florida Governor race, Democratic challenger David Jolly has made significant gains in recent months as Floridians head to the polls today.

Traders currently give Donalds a 62% chance of victory compared with Jolly’s 38%, a substantial difference despite recent surveys showing the candidates separated by just four to six percentage points.

Long shot David Jolly makes race competitive

Despite Donalds maintaining a substantial advantage on Kalshi throughout the election cycle, Jolly’s chances of victory have increased considerably as the Nov. 3 midterms approach.

On Aug. 29, Kalshi traders gave Jolly just a 17.7% chance of winning Florida’s governorship compared with Donalds’ 82.3%. Since then the Democratic challenger’s odds have climbed significantly, reaching 39% on Nov. 2.

The market has since moved back toward Donalds, with his chances climbing to 62% on Election Day as Jolly’s fell to 38%. Despite the Democratic challenger’s substantial gains, Donalds has continued to maintain the lead.

The movement is particularly notable given Florida's longstanding Republican dominance. The state has not elected a Democratic governor since 1994, while President Trump carried Florida by more than 13 points in the 2024 presidential election.

Recent polling shows tightening race

While Donalds continues to hold a substantial lead on Kalshi, traditional polling indicates a considerably tighter contest. According to Newsweek’s Nov. 3 reporting, the latest surveys show Donalds leading Jolly by four to six percentage points. The results represent a significant difference from 2022, when outgoing Republican Governor Ron DeSantis won reelection by nearly 20 points.

The race has also attracted growing attention from national political organizations. On Oct. 1, the Cook Political Report moved Florida’s gubernatorial race from “Likely Republican” to “Lean Republican,” reflecting the increasingly competitive political environment.

According to The New York Times, Jolly has sought to expand Democratic support among independents and moderate Republicans, drawing on his background as a former Republican congressman. Despite Jolly narrowing the gap, Donalds maintains significant advantages in campaign fundraising and Republican voter registration, while receiving endorsements from both President Trump and Governor Ron DeSantis.

Early voting and campaign issues add to uncertainty

Another important development involves early voting, with Democrats showing considerable strength in turnout despite Florida's sizable Republican registration advantage.

More than 5.4 million Floridians had already voted ahead of Election Day, representing nearly 40% of registered voters. While Republicans maintain an advantage of approximately 1.5 million registered voters, Democrats have reported stronger than expected participation in several areas.

The candidates have also emphasized contrasting approaches to affordability, housing costs, and the expansion of artificial intelligence data centers. Jolly has supported a one-year pause on new data center construction, citing concerns about electricity demand, water usage, and property values. Donalds has expressed support for technology investment while calling for regulations protecting local water supplies and preventing additional utility costs from being passed on to residents.

The competitive political environment is also reflected in Kalshi’s Florida Governor margin-of-victory market, where traders currently give Donalds a 22% chance of winning by zero to two percentage points, compared with a 17% chance of Jolly winning by the same margin. Florida’s special Senate election market continues to show Republican Ashley Moody holding a substantial lead over Democrat Angie Nixon, with traders assigning Moody an 87% chance of victory.

The takeaway:

While David Jolly has experienced a remarkable rise on Kalshi, climbing from a Democratic market that once showed just a 4% chance to 38% on Election Day, Byron Donalds continues to maintain a substantial advantage in Florida’s gubernatorial race.

Recent polling has shown a considerably tighter contest than previous statewide elections, while elevated Democratic turnout and disagreements over affordability and development have added uncertainty to the final vote.

  • Byron Donalds winning the Florida Governor race: 62%

  • David Jolly winning the Florida Governor race: 38%

  • Byron Donalds winning by 0–2 percentage points: 22%

  • Ashley Moody winning the Florida Senate race: 87%
